How to Change DNS on a PlayStation or Xbox (and What It Cannot Fix)

A console will let you set DNS by hand, and that is genuinely useful — it clears name-level filtering for the console and everything it streams through. What it will not do is move the console to another country, which is what most people actually wanted.

Console specifics worth knowing

• Both consoles support a proxy on a wired or Wi-Fi connection under the same advanced network screens — host and port only, no credentials field on Xbox.
• Consoles resolve through your router by default, so changing DNS at the router covers every device in the house and is one job instead of three.
• A console will refuse to save network settings it cannot validate, so test the connection after each change rather than assuming it took.

Store regions are not a DNS problem

Prices, catalogues and payment methods are set by the region of the account, not by the address your console connects from. Changing DNS cannot alter an account region, and changing your address generally cannot either — the account is the thing that carries the region.

This is why "unlock another country's store with DNS" does not work: the store is not blocked, it is personalised to an account that was registered somewhere else.

What consoles will not do

No console browser will let you configure much, and neither platform permits installing arbitrary network tools. If the goal is browsing rather than gaming, a console is the wrong device for it — a phone with a proxy set takes two minutes and works better.

Where this stops, and what solves it

A DNS change on a console clears name-level filtering. It does not change your country and it does not change your account region, so regional catalogues and stores are untouched.

If what you need is content licensed to another country for viewing on a screen in the house, the address is what has to be in that country. A router-level private IP does that for every device on the network, including the television and the console.

No. It changes how names resolve, not which country your connection or your account belongs to.

Can I use a proxy on a console?

Both consoles accept a proxy host and port in their advanced network settings. Xbox has no separate credentials field, so authenticate with an IP allowlist instead if the proxy requires it.

Will a DNS change speed up my downloads?

Occasionally, if your ISP resolver is slow or misdirecting. Usually not — download speed is set by the content network and your line, not the resolver.
