How to Unblock a Website in Firefox Without Installing Anything

Firefox is the only mainstream browser that lets you set a proxy and an encrypted resolver inside the browser itself, so you can unblock one browser without touching the rest of the machine. That is exactly what you want on a work laptop you do not administer.

The quick answer

Settings, General, Network Settings, Settings: choose Manual proxy configuration, then enter the host and port you were given. For name-based blocks, also switch on DNS over HTTPS under Privacy & Security and pick a provider.

Setting the proxy

• Prefer SOCKS5 with remote DNS where it is supported: it carries lookups through the proxy too, so a filter cannot see or rewrite them.
• HTTP or HTTPS proxies are fine for browsing; tick "Also use this proxy for HTTPS".
• Enter the host and port exactly as delivered — host:port, no scheme, no trailing slash.
• If the proxy needs credentials, Firefox prompts once and stores them.

Getting encrypted DNS to actually apply

DNS over HTTPS has two failure modes worth knowing. If your network blocks the provider endpoint, Firefox falls back to plain DNS quietly — the setting shows as enabled while your ISP answers lookups. And "Max protection" can break captive portals and internal sites, so on a hotel or office network start with the default.

Test it on a resolver test page and confirm which server answered. An unverified DNS change is the most common reason people conclude a fix stopped working.

Why one browser only is a feature

Why does my proxy stop working after a restart?
