How to Unblock YouTube

YouTube blocks are not all the same, and the method that fixes one does nothing for another. Before changing any settings, work out which of three things is happening — it saves a lot of pointless effort.

The quick answer

If the whole site fails, it is a network block: change your DNS, then use a proxy or VPN if that fails. If only some videos fail, the uploader restricted them by country and you need an address in a permitted country. If a video was removed, nothing will bring it back.

What to do, in order

  1. 1Work out which block you have

    The whole site failing means your network or country blocks YouTube. Videos showing "not available in your country" means video-level geo-restriction. A video saying it was removed for violating guidelines has been deleted and no network change helps.

  2. 2Change DNS for a full site block

    Point your device at 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8, or turn on secure DNS in the browser. Country-wide YouTube blocks are usually enforced by DNS, so this is often enough on its own.

  3. 3Use an address in the right country for video blocks

    Video-level restrictions are applied by YouTube based on where your connection exits, so you need a proxy or VPN in a country where that video is allowed. A cheap datacenter address in the right country is usually sufficient for playback.

  4. 4Prefer a proxy when you only need the browser

    A proxy configured in one browser keeps the rest of your system untouched and needs nothing installed, which makes it a smaller change than a VPN if YouTube in a browser is all you need.

  5. 5Try the YouTube app separately

    The mobile app does not use browser proxy settings. On Android, per-app behaviour depends on the app honouring the system proxy, which YouTube often ignores — so on mobile a VPN or a system-level change is more reliable.

  6. 6Check whether it is your account, not your location

    If a video is unavailable signed in but plays signed out, the restriction is tied to your account region setting rather than your current connection. Signing out and testing isolates that quickly.

Worth knowing first

  • A video the uploader blocked in your country is a licensing decision. Reaching it from another country may breach YouTube terms even when it plays.
  • Playing video through a proxy uses real bandwidth. On a metered residential plan a few hours of streaming can use a noticeable share of the allowance.
  • YouTube is increasingly good at detecting shared datacenter addresses for account-level actions, though plain playback is usually unaffected.

Why does YouTube say a video is not available in my country?
The uploader restricted it by region, often because of music or footage licensing. YouTube applies that rule based on where your connection exits, so connecting through a permitted country is what changes the answer.

For whole-site blocks and region-restricted videos, usually yes. For removed videos, no — deletion is not something a different address changes.
